Empty City (Kong Cheng)
Lyrics by WEN Ya
Translated by Fangjie YU
Translated on Jun. 9, 2017
I could hardly breathe,
In the vacuum emptiness
A desert grows out of a city of neon
I’m still waiting
My heart is dying
My soul needs stimulating
Too deep, too much,
Too possessed,
I am in love,
I am in hell
My pain feeds your joy
So empty is the city
So cruel is the memory
So crowded are the streets
Where is the one for me
My eyebrows knit
My memories haunt
Alone, alone, alone
And now you are gone
I’m still waiting
My heart is dying
My soul needs stimulating
Too deep, too much,
Too possessed,
I am in love,
I am in hell
My pain feeds your joy
So empty is the city
So cruel is the memory
So crowded are the streets
Where is the one for me
My eyebrows knit
My memories haunt
Alone, alone, alone
And now you are gone
So empty is the city
So painful is my soul
So crowded is the world
Will we meet again?
Happinesses are alike,
Not so with pains
Alone, alone, alone
This me who really knows
So empty is the city
So empty when you are gone
My breath thunderstorms,
In the lonely silence
I stand in the dark,
My heart too weak to beat
Alone, alone, alone
My love is meaningless

The music of Empty City was composed by Yang Kun (a song writer and signer famous for his "sore throat"). The purpose I translated the lyrics is to introduce the song to non-Chinese speakers, since, so far there has been no English version available online. The MP3 format can be found on some English websites though.
I would welcome native English speakers who also know Chinese to kindly help me to polish the lyrics (not only for accuracy but also for the musical effect).

空城

可能是寂寞
空气变得很稀薄
满城霓虹开出荒漠
还为你等着
我的心快要死了
要有什么刺激我魂魄
太深, 太多
爱会走火入魔
任由你
自由的
耗在我苦中作乐
这城市那么空
这回忆那么凶
这街道车水马龙
我能和谁相拥
这眉头那么重
这思念那么浓
Alone, alone, alone
这感觉我跟从
还为你等着
我的心快要死了
要有什么刺激我魂魄
太深, 太多,
爱会走火入魔
任由你
自由的
耗在我苦中作乐
这城市那么空
这回忆那么凶
这街道车水马龙
我能和谁相拥
这眉头那么重
这思念那么浓
Alone, alone, alone
这感觉我跟从
这城市那么空
这胸口那么痛
这人海风起云涌
能不能再相逢
这快乐都雷同
这悲伤千万种
Alone, alone, alone
这个我谁能懂
这城市那么空
没有你的空洞
连呼吸带出的风
响得震耳欲聋
我站在黑暗中
心已经跳不动
Alone, alone, alone
再爱也没有用

Translating and Learning
Li Jian is a popular song writer and performer in China. Personally I like his sentimental yet melodious style (both in music and lyrics). Compared with his other songs, this one (Lake Baikal) is mixed with a Russian folk flavor. According to the musician, this song was composed on his holiday at Baikal in Siberia out of a sudden inspiration.
I tried to translate the song simply because it is both acoustically and "visually" beautiful! (And hopefully my translation doesn't make it less so :-) Yet without much experience in translating lyrics (rhyming of which could be more sophisticated), I might not have fully redelivered the beauty of the
Translation of a Poem
It is a shame that so many beautiful Chinese poems are not introduced to the world. When a poem-loving nerd asked me to translate some Taoist or Buddhist poems for him, I found one by Liu Changing (of Tang Dynasty). I hope the poet would excuse me if my translation fails to convey the beauty or even the meaning of his original version. To me, his poem is an elegant landscape painting.

On Manchester by the Sea
Written by Fangjie Yu, June, 2017
If some films are made to make the world happy (like Walt Disney), some to stir excitement, there are also serious ones to tell
people stories about real life, with or without expensive animation, fancy costumes, or spectacular scenes. To me, the beauty of Manchester by the Sea lies exactly in its simple realist style. The characters are average working class people, the language is
real and natural, even the fire accident seems a regular sad news report we could learn once in a while from the media. But the
art of narration gives so much complexity and depth to a “simple” story that it tou

Wow! A 39-y-o new president! To me he's a symbol of passion, determination, intelligence and romanticness. I like what he said about multiculturalism.
